The Black Magic of Negative Thoughts

Our life is shaped by our mind, for we become what we think!

I once read that negative thoughts are like Velcro, they stick and hold; whereas our positive and joyful thoughts are like Teflon, they slide away. We have to deliberately choose to hold onto positive thoughts before they “imprint” …

Conversations you have with yourself have a profound effect on your life. Happiness and success are the products of positive thinking! You have 1000’s of thoughts per day and with them comes the opportunity to build yourself up or tear yourself down.  If you call yourself names, second-guess your decisions and doubt your capabilities you will not perform. Continuous negative thoughts will most certainly harm your physical and mental health.

Our brains use repetition to learn new things. When you play a song on repeat, your brain will recognize the lyrics and melody and soon you will be singing along. The same thing happens when you continuously speak and think negative words and thoughts.

When words and phrases like “I hate my job!” or “My colleagues always irritate me!” becomes part of your daily routine, it will affect you, and you know what? It will become a reality. Soon your job will hate YOU and your colleagues will avoid you and you will not even realize that you brought this onto yourself. Remember the saying “Smile and the world smiles with you, cry and you cry alone” by Stanley Gordon West? I would like to make this saying more general and rephrase to: “Think and say positive things and your world will be positive; think and say negative thoughts and the world will swallow you”.

The toxic effects of negative talking are very real. One of the coaching tools I use comes to mind. The theory dictates that circumstances trigger certain thoughts which in turn trigger feelings. These feelings will result in certain actions you take and your actions will deliver certain results. Circumstances are those things in life that you don’t have control over, things outside of yourself. It’s your past, people and the worldly things around you. We continuously have thoughts about our circumstances and these thoughts results in certain feelings or vibrations in your body. Your thoughts will leave you happy, sad, angry, relaxed, uptight, make you smile, cry or curse. You might feel satisfied or disappointed but whatever your feelings are, they will cause you to take some form of action or lack of action. Your actions might also include some decisions you take. When you take action you will have results. Of course, a lack of action or no action is also a form of result.

If you are following my explanation of the model, you will now understand that the results you achieve are a direct result of your thoughts. The very same thoughts you have about a circumstance which you cannot do anything about. If you can’t change the circumstances, all you can really do is change the way you think about them. This will leave you with different feelings, actions and results! If you desire a more positive life, begin by changing the way you think about your circumstances. Doing this consciously during your day will change the way you feel, change the way you act and react, and suddenly you will experience more positive results in your life.

Your Negative Thoughts creates negative circumstances…

When you look at this from another person’s point of view, “YOU” become the circumstances for this person. This person cannot control you, but the vibrations created by the words you speak will have a direct impact on the thoughts, feelings, actions, and results for this person! Words are powerful. Every moment of the day we are busy reading, speaking or listening. Our words have an emotional attachment to our lives. Through this emotional attachment, we create our associations, beliefs, and perceptions about ourselves and others. If you have a negative view of many things in life, perhaps it is time to pay attention to the words you use because the more you use negative words the easier it becomes to believe them. The world around you is simply responding to the energy of your words. It is completely within your control and ability to make the switch and use positive words to uplift every aspect of your life.

Balance between negative and positive thoughts…

4 Things to do/or not to do, to have a more positive life!

  • Break the habit of negative thoughts by reminding yourself how amazing you are and find happiness in everything you do.
  • Listen to positive and uplifting music, over and over and over and sing along!
  • Only speak positively about people and verbally express gratefulness for everything you have. Grateful people are 25% happier!
  • Take stock of any negative thought patterns you might have, and talk back on them. You do not hate your job, things are just not ideal at present. Your colleagues are not irritating you; perhaps it is you who are way too sensitive. They are just as perfect as you are, and just as different to you as you are to them.

If you experience difficulty in changing the way you think, it might benefit you to make use of a coach who can provide you with tools to assist retraining your brain.
